New York, NY – March 8, 2009 - Two Hermanas of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. bring their talent and star to the NYC scene. Athena Colon (Xi Alumna, Stroll Mistress) and Ananda Malave (Phi Chapter) star in two plays this Spring. Both plays bring attention to women’s struggles in two different worlds.
Athena stars in “The Lonely Soldiers Monologues - Women at War in Iraq”. This play brings to life seven interviews from US Military women. It brings their stories and hardships to light. “Their stories must be told and I am honored to do so,” says Athena. Ariel Batungbacal, one of the Hermanas that have experienced the war praises this work saying, “Personally speaking, I am grateful there are those who are willing to truly try to understand what we--women Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines are willing to sacrifice.”
Ananda Malave stars in “Stop Drugging Me” which she also wrote, directs and produces. This performance show takes the audience through the heart and mind of the main character, Ananda, using humor and truth. “Stop Drugging Me” is an experimental theater piece that “uses poetry and dialogue to empower women,” explains Ananda. She also explains the play as showing how the mind can be affected by what people say as it is by drugs.
Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. congratulates Athena and Ananda on their accomplishments. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing more.
