As we embark on our eighteenth year of Solidaridad, Inspiracion, and Amistad, Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., strives to travel through new channels of involvement in the Latino community while reinforcing our commitment to our philanthropies. We look forward to increasing our presence on a national front, and we encourage all members in and outside of the Hermandad to take an active stance in our community and pave the way for generations to come.
Our precious and rare Hermandad is, not only a family unit, but also a vehicle for change. We emphasize the importance of education and knowledge through various educational programs and involvement in our community. As an organization composed of strong and dedicated women, we have striven to empower all women, both within and outside the Hermandad.
History
In the mid 1980s, a group of women from four different universities in New York set out to create an organization that would meet their needs, help their communities, unite all women, and uphold a set of distinct goals. Although the sorority's history can be tracked back to 1985 in Troy, New York, the sorority was founded on September 29, 1990 by thirteen inspiring women from SUNY Albany, SUNY StonyBrook, SUNY New Paltz, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
