SISTERS PARTICIPATE IN SIXTH ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL
FAIR "
On
Sunday, August 21, 2005 members of Hermandad de Sigma
Iota Alpha, Inc. participated in the "sixth annual
back to school fair". Members distributed various
school supplies to children in Corona, Queens along
with the main sponsors of the event Latin Women in
Action.
Corona
Queens, New York -- August 24, 2005 -- Members of
the national sorority, Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha,
Inc., commonly referred to as SIA, gave a little back
to the community this past Sunday, participating in
the Sixth Annual Back to School Fair, in Corona Queens,
New York.
The
Annual event was held on August 21, 2005 at Hinton
Park.. The event was started by Latin Women in Action,
main sponsor of the event, to motivate low-income
students between the ages of kindergarten through
college to return to school.
Along
side of other volunteers, the member of SIA distributed
thousands of free school supplies to needy children
including pencils, folders and construction paper.
"It was one of the best events I [have ever]
participated in," said Betania Diaz, long time
member of the SIA organization, "it was great
to see kids smiling and excited to get school supplies."
Ms.
Diaz went on to say that she was looking forward to
SIA participating in the event next year and further
involvement with other events sponsored by Latin Women
in Action.
Hermandad
de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. was founded on September
29, 1990 at four New York State Universities. Members
of the organization are dedicated to scholarship,
service and professional development within Latino
communities nationally.
