SIA SISTERS MAKES STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER AND RAISE OVER $2000

NEW YORK, NY, October 15, 2006 – After months of fundraising for Breast Cancer Awareness research, the Phi Chapter of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. along with other New York City and New Jersey Hermanas, participated in the six mile walk that took place in Central Park, NY on October 16, 2006. They were led by Team Leader, Wendy A. Toribio, an alumna of the Phi Chapter at New York University.

It was a chilly Sunday morning, but these ladies were bundled up and ready to walk for a great cause! They promptly registered for the walk and were astounded at the total amount of money that resulted from their fundraising efforts. In a matter of two months, they were able to raise $1,800.00! Central Park was beaming with excitement as participants from all walks of life gathered for this great cause. The Ladies of SIA enthusiastically took on the six mile challenge—some of them walking in honor of a family member or friend. "It was really inspiring to see so many people gather for the cause. And as many people as there were at the walk, it did not nearly reflect the amount of people that have had their lives effected by breast cancer in some way. That fact reinforced the worthiness of the cause. I was very honored to take part in raising awareness for the illness," says Michelle Gonzalez, an undergrad member of the Phi Chapter.

On Thursday, October 19, 2006, the Ladies of the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan Organized Alumnae of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. hosted an afterwork event in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event was titled “Think Pink Thursday” and was held at People Lounge located in the Lower East Side. The venue had a delightful ambiance which characterized the night. Hermanas and friends mingled over cocktails as light
music played in the background.

Attendees were asked to make a small donation of $5 dollars. The night proved to be
successful as the Ladies of SIA managed to fundraise $200.00. The proceeds of this afterwork event were generously donated to the Phi Chapter of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., bringing their fundraising efforts to a total of $2,000.00.

The Phi Chapter of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. has participated in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer since the Spring of 2002. They continue to host events that promote Breast Cancer Awareness and through their fundraising efforts have contributed to the search for a cure. The ladies of the Phi Chapter and the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan Organized Alumnae of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. would like to thank the many sponsors and participants that contributed to their fundraising efforts.
