Alysia King
This winter, another SIA hermana made the decision to serve her country in the US Navy. Alysia King, H. Iwa, grew up an Army child (her father served in the US Army). It was this exposure that fostered a sense of respect and honor for those who serve in the armed forces. Alysia made the decision to become a servicewoman when she first entered college at Oswego University (Lambda Chapter), however she ultimately felt it was not the right time to do so.
"I decided to look into (the US Navy) because my best friend has been in it for the last nine years. After seeing the comraderie and 'Hermandad' amongst the new and older members...I got the feeling I could fit in with this group," says Alysia. She likens the feeling to what she felt when she first became a member of SIA saying it was like home, an instant family.
Before enlisting, Alysia was working at a local college as well as going to school for a Master's degree. Despite making a career move, education remains one of her priorities and she intends to complete her degree. Within SIA, she was the acting ADMPA and an undergraduate chapter advisor.
Alysia feels this will be just another challenge that she will overcome. "I see this as a way to renew my sense of empowerment and fulfill a lifelong goal. I also think it's going to be fun!" She adds, "Do or do not, there is no try." This is a quote she lives by. The word "can't" is not in a SIA's vocabulary she says playfully.
