Hermanas
nationwide team up to raise funds for St. Jude’s
New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA,
May 2007 – The fourth annual St. Jude’s Penny drive, “Quest for a Million
Pennies”, saw record-breaking numbers.
This year, members of the National Association of Latino Fraternal
Organizations (NALFO) raised nearly $12,250.25 for St. Jude’s Children’s
Research Hospital. Hermandad de
Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. joined with 12 other NALFO organizations to help support
this effort for the fourth year in a row.
Under the leadership and motivation of the Community Affairs Director,
Joanne Ramirez, SIA raised more than $2,600 during this years
drive—breaking its previous records. This amount helped make SIA one of the top three
contributing organizations. “It is inspiring to see NALFO organizations come together
to raise funds for such an important cause,” says Ivone De Jesus, SIA National
President.
Each year,
the penny drive closes with a social/networking event for the participating
organizations. May 16th, Hermanas in Los Angeles participated in the bowl-a-thon. The night was full of socializing and
of course, bowling. “We almost
won,” says Jacqueline Oseguera, H. Isis from the Alpha Zeta Chapter, “we came
in second place, only by 4 points!”
However, hermanas were not concerned with winning so much as
participating in the event that supported St. Jude’s. In New York, sisters attended a spoken word event at Habibi
Lounge on May 2nd. It
was as an intimate atmosphere that allowed members of the NALFO community and
St. Jude’s representatives to network and celebrate the hard work of NALFO and
its supporters. “As my first
event,” says Ramirez, “it was very fulfilling to see our members participate.”
