Hermanas Gather at Wildwood, NJ for SILK on the
Beach

Wildwood, NJ, June 11, 2007– After much anticipation, the Hermanas of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. (SIA) gathered at Wildwood, NJ for Batanga Beach Break ’07/SILK 6 on the Beach. SIA had a huge representation at this event as Hermanas ranged from members who joined in 1992 to the most recent membership class of 2007. After months of hard work, SIA’s National Stroll Team (NST) took third place in this year’s competition with their remarkable and creative performances. This year’s NST was led by Brenda Tollinchi and composed of the following members: Jannira Roman, Yaritza Mejia, Jessica Rivera, Raquel Rivera, Estrella Buelvas, Jackie Gonzales, Lisbel Rosario, Luz Pichardo, Athena Colon, Julia Acevedo, and Betsy Placencia.
SILK 6 took place at Wildwood’s Convention Center following a performance by Latino reggaeton sensation, Calle 13. Hermanas filled the upper mezzanine section, making SIA one of the most represented sororities. The colors red, gold, and blue were proudly worn and the enthusiasm and support for the NST was clearly heard in the cheers and chants of Hermanas. SIA’s NST moved on round after round exhibiting their energetic and creative strolls. SIA proudly took home third place. SIA would like to congratulate the SILK 6 winners: Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/ Lambda Pi Chi Sorority, Inc. and Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc.
Hermanas also participated in the various activities that took place on the beach. From volleyball and softball tournaments to the King and Queen of the Beach competition, SIA made its presence felt. SIA’s very own Jalene Mojica was crowned Queen of the Beach. SILK on the Beach became a weekend of bonding and sisterhood as both veteran and new Hermanas exchanged stories and got to know each other better.
